satisfaction

Posted under Quran, books, tasawwuf by rahma

There is almost nothing quite as satisfying as a great find at a used book store.  Ok, perhaps that betrays what a boring and uneventful life I lead, but if that’s how it is, so be it.

Usually the Islam section at used bookstores are skewed heavily towards the “omg islam is evil11!!1!” genre and books that are written about Islam from an outsiders perspective.  Qur’ans are usually NJ Dawood, with the occasional AJ Arberry thrown in.

Imagine my suprise then, when I found the following books during my weekend book browse.  It was all I could do to stop myself from doing a happy dance and making sajda shukr right there in the store.  Book reviews will be forthcoming, after I finish reading inshaAllah.

  1. rebecca Said,

I have that Quran translation. It isn’t my favorite, but I like the typeface and paper. It makes it easy to read. I don’t care for the translations that are printed on that really thin paper that reminds me of church hymnals.

  2. alajnabiya Said,

What you didn’t say is how much you paid for them. Am I too nosy? Congratulations of your good find.

  3. rahma Said,

Rebecca - What is your favorite? I should start taking a survey.

alajnabiya - The Qur’an was $7, the Rumi was $5 and the Haddad was $7 I believe. All half price or less :D Yaay for deals!

  4. rebecca Said,

Very good deals. I think I paid close to $30 for my Qur’an.

My favorite is Asad, by far, but I sometimes get into T.B. Irving’s translation too.

  5. alajnabiya Said,

Good deals. I looked up that Qur’an online last night and it was on sale for $27 plus the S&H. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of them.

An unrelated question, but is there no way on hadithuna to subscribe to comments when you leave a comment?

  6. rahma Said,

Umm, I am not sure. When I get a chance, I will see if I can play around and add an rss feed button for the posts and comments. If I can’t find something, I’ll ask the peeps in charge inshaAllah.

  7. alajnabiya Said,

Thank you! I like to be able to subscribe to posts that I comment on so I don’t have to remember to keep checking back to see the responses.

  8. Umm Layth Said,

    as salamu ‘alaykum

man, those are some deals! I miss going to discount bookstores. After discovering the library I stopped going : P. I haven’t yet gotten my hands on Aisha Bewley’s translation but alhamdulillah I have started reading Key to the Garden and it’s another great add to our collection of tasawwuf related books, alhamdulillah.
